Providing depth in the gray zone.<\/h2>\n

Lately, life feels a lot like it\u2019s sitting in a gray zone.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m still in the Army, figuratively treading water while waiting for retirement. Big changes are coming, but they aren\u2019t here yet. It can feel like standing still, even though a lot is happening under the surface.<\/p>\n

That feeling has been bleeding into my art in an interesting way.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been leaning harder into my rockabilly style and pulling from influences that have followed me most of my life\u2014cars I\u2019ve built, a motorcycle I once owned, and the culture of mechanical craftsmanship. That led to my latest piece: a half-sleeve concept centered around a skull-and-piston motif I\u2019ve used before, but pushed further this time.<\/p>\n

As I was drawing it, I kept thinking about contrast.<\/p>\n

In tattooing, contrast is everything.<\/p>\n

Not enough contrast and the design blurs together.<\/p>\n

Too much contrast and you lose nuance\u2014the piece can start to feel flat or cartoonish.<\/p>\n

The sweet spot is balance. Creating meaning<\/a> through clear separation between light and dark. \u00a0Providing depth, while still leaving room for detail and texture.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what I was aiming for in this design.<\/p>\n

My past experiences continue to influence me and drive my passions for art and auto mechanics.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The piston and skull sit at the center as the power source. Around it are \u201cbubbles\u201d containing different vehicles that represent chapters of my past\u2014projects, machines, and experiences that shaped me. Blue lightning flows outward from the piston into each bubble, creating individual moments of light hitting shadow.<\/p>\n

Each bubble has its own contrast.<\/p>\n

Its own balance point.<\/p>\n

Its own story.<\/p>\n

In a lot of ways, that mirrors where I\u2019m at in life.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not in the darkest place.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not standing in full light either.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m somewhere in between\u2014working in the contrast.<\/p>\n

Outside the studio, we\u2019re starting to get our current house ready to list so we can move toward the next chapter. Later this evening I\u2019ll probably hop on my Onewheel and cruise the neighborhood for a bit. Fresh air always helps clear my head. I\u2019ll likely end the night with my Marine buddy \u2014him with a cigar, me with my pipe, both of us with a glass of bourbon and a few honest conversations.<\/p>\n

None of it feels rushed.<\/p>\n

None of it feels stuck.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not trying to force a faster pace. I\u2019m trying to stay grateful for where I am, aware of what I have, and focused on preparing for what\u2019s coming.<\/p>\n

Just like tattooing, life isn\u2019t always about extremes.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s about learning to live\u2014and build\u2014in the contrast.<\/p>\n
