Meaning isn\u2019t something you can force. It\u2019s not a single moment of clarity or some grand revelation \u2014 it\u2019s something you build through time, repetition, and perspective. It\u2019s found in the layers, the same way shading and color give depth to a tattoo.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Today\u2019s Artist Hour<\/strong><\/a> subject was the chrysanthemum<\/em>. At first glance, it felt almost as complicated to sketch as it is to spell \u2014 a mess of overlapping petals and tight curves that seemed impossible to control. But once I broke it down into its simplest shapes, it wasn\u2019t so bad.<\/p>\r\n

That\u2019s how meaning works too. From a distance, life looks chaotic \u2014 full of twists, layers, and details we can\u2019t make sense of. But when you slow down and focus on one piece at a time, the beauty reveals itself. Meaning doesn\u2019t live in the noise; it\u2019s in the pattern we uncover through patience and perspective.<\/p>\r\n

The\u00a0Inktober<\/strong>\u00a0prompt for today was\u00a0\u201csweep.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0It took me a while to land on an idea, but then the image hit me \u2014 that iconic scene from\u00a0The Karate Kid<\/em>, when Johnny\u2019s coach yells, \u201cSweep the leg!\u201d It\u2019s a moment charged with meaning. Not because of the move itself, but because of what it represents: choice, pressure, pride, and integrity. These all resonate deeply with me.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

I drew that scene \u2014 the two of them squared off in the ring \u2014 not as a moment of violence, but as a moment of decision. Meaning isn\u2019t always clean or pretty. Sometimes it\u2019s about how we respond when we\u2019re pushed \u2014 when our principles are tested.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Meaning lives in the tension between what we\u00a0<\/span>can<\/em>\u00a0do and what we\u00a0<\/span>should<\/em>\u00a0do.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In art, it\u2019s the difference between a tattoo that just looks cool and one that says something real. In life, it\u2019s the difference between reacting and responding.<\/p>\r\n

The chrysanthemum reminded me that complexity can be beautiful once you understand its rhythm. The \u201csweep\u201d scene reminded me that meaning comes from intention \u2014 from the values behind our actions that truly define us. Both are lessons in awareness: know what you\u2019re creating, and why.<\/p>\r\n

Meaning gives weight to what we do. It connects purpose to feeling, and action to understanding. It\u2019s what makes the work \u2014 and the life \u2014 worth the time it takes to create.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

I used to find my meaning in service \u2014 as a medic, a first responder, and a Soldier. When those chapters closed, I had to redefine what meaning looked like for me. I feel blessed that I found art and tattooing to fill that space.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I truly hope I get the opportunity to share this blessing and connect with others.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Purpose<\/a> gives us direction. Meaning gives us depth.<\/p>\r\n

Next, I\u2019ll be exploring\u00a0Connection<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 how all these ideas, drawings, and stories begin to intertwine, and how the people we meet along the way help our art, and our lives, come fully alive. I don\u2019t believe any of this is by chance, and I look forward to what lies ahead.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
