Every tattoo has two sides \u2014 the artist\u2019s and the client\u2019s.<\/h2>\n

One holds the tools, the other carries the story. Together, they form something that neither could create alone.<\/p>\n

Blog art subjects – Inktober: Puzzling and Onion | Artist Hour: Torch<\/h3>\n

Every tattoo tells a story, but not all stories are easy to read at first glance. Some are like puzzles \u2014 complex, with a few pieces still missing. Sunday\u2019s Inktober prompt was Puzzling, and that\u2019s exactly where my mind went.<\/p>\n

For my first color<\/a> drawing of the week, I created a heart-shaped box made of two hearts \u2014 one with a tattoo machine on the lid, the other a puzzle still missing a piece. Inside that puzzle: a wave and a palm tree, symbols of peace and home. \u00a0It represents what currently drives me: my passion for tattooing and art, the ocean that still calls to me, and the truth that I\u2019m still in progress. I\u2019m not yet complete \u2014 but I\u2019m building toward it, piece by piece.<\/p>\n

This sketch represents where I am \u2014 in the middle of rebuilding, filling in the missing pieces, and bringing art back into my life.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Tattooing, like life, rarely comes together all at once. It takes time, patience, and perspective to see how the individual pieces connect \u2014 the experiences, the lessons, even the mistakes. That\u2019s where the story really lives: in the process of putting yourself back together in new ways.<\/p>\n

And that brings me to today\u2019s Inktober<\/a> prompt: Onion.<\/p>\n

Beneath the surface are the things that shape us: memories, pain, pride, purpose.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

My mind immediately went to that moment in Shrek when he says, \u201cOgres are like onions.\u201d It\u2019s funny \u2014 but also true. We all have layers. Beneath the surface are the things that shape us: memories, pain, pride, purpose. The same goes for tattoos. A simple design might look like ink and color, but each layer \u2014 the lines, shading, and meaning \u2014 reveals something deeper about the person wearing it. \u00a0I completely mistook a simple picture a close friend shared with me of a tattoo he had gotten. \u00a0I did not notice the tattoo or its meaning, but thought it was a picture of someone getting a tattoo in their kitchen. \u00a0Instead of looking closer, I gave a short response and hurt his feelings with my insensitive words. \u00a0Once I figured out what it really was I felt like an ogre (stinky and makes people cry). \u00a0I owed him an apology, and learned the lesson Donkey learned that day to look closer and peel back the layers. \u00a0BTW, the tattoo was really cool and had great meaning behind it (and not done in a kitchen).<\/p>\n

Every tattoo I design and create is a collaboration between what\u2019s visible and what\u2019s hidden \u2014 between what a client wants to show the world and what they\u2019re quietly carrying inside. It\u2019s art through the skin, not just on it.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s Tattooing 101<\/a> Artist Hour subject is a torch, and that feels fitting. As I keep working through my own transition \u2014 from the structure and rules of military life to the creative rhythm of art \u2014 I feel that flame growing stronger. The torch reminds me that even in uncertain times, we carry our own light. \u00a0As we move through our own layers and find the missing pieces of our puzzles, we each carry a light \u2014 a reminder of who we are and what we\u2019ve learned. Sometimes that light helps guide others who are still finding their way.<\/p>\n

When I think about Stories in the Skin, that\u2019s what I now see: puzzle pieces and layers, light and shadow, all working together to remind us that even when we feel unfinished, we\u2019re still becoming something beautiful. Every tattoo tells a story \u2014 and sometimes, that story starts long before the ink ever touches the skin.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
